A Calmer Way to Cozy Up Your Home This Fall

A Calmer Way to Cozy Up Your Home This Fall

There is something about fall that makes us want to change our homes.

The first cool evening arrives and suddenly we're thinking about blankets, candles, warm colors, fall decor and all the little things that make home feel cozy.

And I love those things too.

But before you start adding more to your home this fall, I want to suggest something a little different:

Start by asking how you want your home to feel.

Not how you want it to look in a photo. Not what you're supposed to buy for fall. Not what everyone else is decorating with.

How do you want it to feel to live there?

      • Maybe you want to walk through the door and feel like you can exhale.

      • Maybe you want mornings to feel a little less rushed.

      • Maybe you want the living room to be somewhere your family actually wants to gather.

      • Or maybe you just want to look around without immediately noticing ten things that need to be picked up, moved or dealt with.

If any of that sounds familiar, your fall refresh might have less to do with decorating and more to do with creating a home that supports you.

Start With What Isn't Working

In September, we've been talking a lot about making room for what matters.

And sometimes that starts with noticing the little things that aren't working anymore.

      • Maybe everyone trips over the shoes by the door.

      • Maybe the kitchen counter has become the permanent home for things that don't really have another place.

      • Maybe your living room technically has plenty of furniture, but none of it is particularly comfortable.

      • Maybe there's a room you rarely use because it was designed for a version of your life that doesn't really exist anymore.

You don't necessarily need to redo any of it.

Start smaller.

Ask yourself:

What is making everyday life harder than it needs to be?

That's a much more useful question than, What should I buy for fall?

Once you know what's bothering you, you can make changes that actually matter.

Cozy Isn't the Same as Full

This is where fall decorating can get a little tricky, especially in a smaller home.

We want cozy, so we add things.

  • Another pillow.

  • Another blanket.

  • A basket.

  • Candles.

  • Pumpkins.

  • Signs.

  • Branches.

Before long, the room certainly looks like fall, but it may also feel more crowded than it did before.

Here's something I've been thinking about a lot lately:

Cozy isn't how much you add. It's how good it feels to stay.

Sometimes cozy is...

      • a comfortable sofa you can sink into at the end of the day.

      •  warm lamplight instead of the overhead light.

      • a soft blanket and a cup of coffee.

      • simply having enough empty space around you that the room doesn't feel busy.

Before adding another layer, make sure the room itself feels good.

Let Your Furniture Help

One of my favorite ways to make a smaller home easier to live in is choosing furniture that quietly does more than one job.

That doesn't mean every piece needs to transform into five different things.

It just means that when space is limited, it's worth asking whether the furniture taking up that space is really supporting your life.

      • A coffee table with hidden storage can give the things you use every evening somewhere to disappear.

      • A sleeper sofa can give you comfortable everyday seating without requiring a separate guest room.

      • A storage ottoman can hold blankets while also giving you somewhere to put your feet.

      • A kitchen island can add prep space, storage and a place to gather without requiring a bigger kitchen.

That's the kind of multifunctional furniture I love most.

It isn't about squeezing more into your home.

It's about needing less furniture to do more.

Give Your Eyes Somewhere to Rest

Here's another thing I've learned: a room can be organized and still feel cluttered.

Sometimes the problem isn't how much you own.

It's how much you can see.

Every little thing sitting on a counter, shelf or table asks for a tiny bit of your attention.

That doesn't mean you have to become a minimalist or get rid of everything you love.

Instead, try giving more of your everyday belongings somewhere to go behind a door, inside a drawer or underneath a lid.

Keep the things that support your life.

Just don't make your eyes look at all of them at the same time.

And leave a little empty space on purpose.

      • An empty corner of a countertop isn't wasted.

      • A tabletop doesn't have to be completely styled.

      • A shelf doesn't have to be full.

Sometimes that little bit of breathing room is exactly what makes a home feel calmer.

Make a Little Room for Yourself, Too

We spend a lot of time making our homes work for everyone else.

      • Where will everyone sit?

      • Where do the shoes go?

      • Where will guests sleep?

      • Where do we store everything?

But somewhere in all of that, I'd like you to think about yourself too.

You don't need a whole reading room, sitting room or private retreat.

Maybe you just need one place...

A comfortable chair beside a window.

A little table for your coffee.

A warm lamp.

A place where you can read, scroll, drink your morning coffee or simply sit for ten minutes without doing anything productive.

Not every square foot of a small home has to work harder.

Some of it can simply help you slow down.

And Before the Busy Season Arrives…

October is a wonderful time to think about these things because November and December have a way of getting busy very quickly.

  • More cooking.

  • More packages.

  • More people.

  • More stuff coming into the house.

  • More things on the calendar.

That's why I don't think preparing your home for the holidays has to begin with holiday decorating.

It can begin with making everyday life a little easier before everything speeds up.

      • Clear the kitchen surface you'll need later.

      • Give shoes and coats somewhere easy to land.

      • Make sure the living room actually works for gathering.

      • Create storage for the things that always seem to float around the house.

      • And let go of the idea that your home has to look perfect before anyone walks through the door.

A home that supports real life is already doing something beautiful.

A Different Kind of Fall Refresh

So if you're feeling that familiar fall urge to change something at home, you don't have to ignore it.

Just start somewhere different this year.

Before asking:

What should I add?

Try asking:

What would make living here feel better?

  • Maybe the answer is more comfort.

  • Maybe it's less visual clutter.

  • Maybe it's furniture that works harder.

  • Maybe it's an easier routine.

  • Maybe it's one quiet corner that belongs to you.

Whatever the answer is, start there.

Because your home doesn't have to be bigger, perfectly organized or beautifully decorated in every corner to feel good.

It just needs to support the life happening inside it.
